Paediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) training is structured as a “supra-speciality” competency-based training programme. You must therefore have full-accredited training in a base speciality.
PCCM training in the Childrens’ Health Ireland PCCUs, is recognised by the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (JFICMI) in Ireland.
Currently there are 2 tertiary Paediatric Critical Care Units (PCCUs) in the Republic of Ireland. They are specialised facilities within Children’s Health Ireland, CHI @ Crumlin and CHI @Temple Street. Crumlin is a 23-bedded tertiary PCCU fully staffed to PCCU standards. CHI @ Temple Street is a 9 bedded tertiary PCCU. On completion of the National Children’s Hospital on St James site, these will amalgamate into a 42-bedded PCCU. Admissions currently approximated to 1500 per year over the two sites. Our unique patient population ranges in age from 24 weeks gestation to 18 years. The training year will be based primarily in CHI @ Crumlin with the opportunity of a neuro-critical care module in CHI @ Temple Street.

Dear All,
The last few months have been a busy time for the Joint Faculty. There have been several changes within the Board since I have taken over the role of Dean. Dr Jennifer Hastings has taken over the role of chair of the Training Committee. Dr Peter Moran is the incoming Chair of Education and Dr Catherine Nix is the incoming chair of the of the Credentials Committee. Dr Mags Doherty is the new honorary secretary. I would like to thank them in advance for the work they will be doing for the Joint Faculty, but also for all the work they have already done to improve and enhance ICM training in Ireland. I would also like to thank Dr Andrew Westbrook for the excellent work he did as Dean in the last three years.
Much of the Joint Faculty’s recent attention has been focused on issues arising from the changes to the anaesthesiology CSCST. Following discussions with the CAI, the Joint Faculty and numerous stakeholders, including those working in model 3 hospitals, I am hopeful that the working groups that have emerged will go a long way to addressing the legitimate concerns raised by our anaesthesiology and intensive care colleagues around Ireland.
The Joint Faculty is also looking ahead and exploring some new aspects of training. We have convened a working group to explore the implementation of workplace based assessments as part of our competency based training program. We are also in the planning stage of postgraduate study days for JFICMI trainees. Furthermore, a recent change to the FJFICMI examination eligibility was approved at our September board meeting. With this change, doctors will be eligible to sit the Fellowship examination on completion of 8 months of supervised structured modular training in units accredited for training by the JFICMI.
And a last few announcements.
Finally, I hope to meet lots of you at the upcoming ICSI meeting in Kilkenny on November 15-16th.
Best wishes
Dr Enda O’ Connor
Dear All,
As the year draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to extend warm wishes to you and your loved ones for the festive season. Whether you are spending time with family and friends or continuing to provide vital care to patients, I hope the season brings you many moments of peace and happiness.
Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be another busy and exciting year for the Joint Faculty. Below are some key dates and events to mark in your calendar. Further information will be shared as the dates approach.
I would like to thank all staff in ICUs throughout the country for your continued dedication and hard work delivering high quality critical care services and supporting teaching and training in intensive care medicine and anaesthesiology. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the people who have contributed to the numerous JFICMI activities in 2024, the courses, meetings, hospital visits, examinations and interviews. It is with only your goodwill and enthusiasm that the JFICMI can continue to deliver improvements in training and for our critical care community.
Wishing you all a joyful Christmas and a successful and fulfilling 2025.
Best regards,
Dr Enda O’ Connor Dean
