Dean’s Message

Dec 10th 2025

I am writing to update you on JFICMI developments during 2025. It has been another successful and productive year for the Joint Faculty and I would like to thank the members of the Board, our committees and our secretariat for all the work they have done to contribute to this success. I would like to also acknowledge the efforts of senior healthcare staff working in ICUs and anaesthesiology departments around the country, who continue to deliver high quality critical care while educating and supervising the future generation of health professionals in Ireland.

I would like to highlight a few notable JFICMI developments in 2025:

  • A new series of JFICMI Trainee Study Days were launched in the Mater, St James’s and Galway hospitals. We also ran our inaugural JFICMI-RCPI Study Day in November. A big thank you to everyone involved in these successful events.
  • The National Standards for Adult Critical Care Units were updated to include standards for model 3 hospitals. The Joint Faculty have since commenced training inspections of model 3 hospitals with the hope of extending training recognition to these centres.
  • Recruitment took place for the July 2026 intake of trainees, including into the 2-year Fellowship programme for year-2 advanced clinical fellows. Interest in our training posts remains high, amongst both anaesthesiology and non-anaesthesiology non-consultant doctors.
  • The Joint Faculty continued to engage with the College of Anaesthesiologists as we collaboratively navigate the White Paper Group recommendations stemming from the CSCST change in 2024.

There are some important 2026 dates for your calendar.

  • JFICMI Trainee Study Days: Beaumont 10/02/26; Galway 12/06/26; JFICMI/RCPI 03/11/26
  • JFICMI Training Committee/Board meetings: 20/01/26, 21/04/26
  • JFICMI Exam preparation course: week commencing 09/03/26
  • CAI Annual Congress: 21/05/26-22/05/26
  • JFICMI Exam: Written 30/04/26; Clinical/SOEs 28/05/26

As the year draws to a close, I would ask trainees and trainers to ensure that all in-training assessments for 2025 have been completed and submitted to the Joint Faculty.

Finally, I hope that you all get to spend some valuable time with family and friends over the Christmas and New year period. I look forward to working with many of you again in 2026 to drive further improvements in intensive care practice and training.
